FARGO — The weather has been anything but "springlike" this year, but two local organizations are prepping for outdoor fun to come

The Dakota Prairie Chapter (DPC) of the North Country Hiking Trail Association is hosting its Second Annual Backpacking and Hiking Expo at the Jon L. Wanzek Center for Scouting in south Fargo from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 16.

The featured speaker Dan "Knotts" Binde, of Lake Park, Minnesota, is a triple crown thru-hiker, having hiked the Pacific Crest, Continental Divide and Appalachian Trails. Thru-hiking is long distance hiking where you hike one trail from start to finish in one hiking season. Last year he set the Appalachian Trail's record for the fastest, self-supported thru-hike.

Additionally, expo-goers will have an opportunity to sample hiking and backpacking foods, shop for gear and learn more about day hiking, backpacking, winter camping, family camping.

Still not inspired to plan your next outdoor weekend?

On April 18, Nature of the North is hosting a car camping workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m at Wild Terra Cider and Brewing, 6 12th Street N., Fargo.

Longtime outdoor enthusiast and founder of Nature of the North Jon Walters says whether you're looking for a quick weekend getaway or a long road trip to the coast, car camping allows you to escape life's daily stressors and explore the world at a fraction of the cost.

"The biggest reason we're hosting it is to share the overall idea that adventure is at our fingertips," says Walters. "When you start car camping, you realize how easily and frequently you can actually get into the outdoors."

Workshop attendees will learn the essentials of car camping, including suggestions on gear, ideas on nearby weekend adventures as well as tips and tricks for organization and basic skills.

"We'll mainly be covering the many different ways you can approach car camping. Anywhere from the long-term #vanlife setups where you sleep inside, to tossing a couple organized totes in your Toyota Corolla and pulling out your tent when you get there," Walters says.

Pre-event registration is $10 (plus tax). You can pay $15 (cash only) at the door the day of the event.
