Raised on radio: Under the Streetlamp tunes in oldies from four decades
FARGO — When some cast members finished their run as "Jersey Boys," they didn't go on to Broadway, they went back to the streets.
Shonn Wiley and some of his castmates from the wildly popular jukebox musical didn't want to let the music die, so they formed their own oldies act, Under the Streetlamp.
The vocal quartet bring classic hits to the Fargo Theatre Friday night.
While "Jersey Boys" illustrates the rise and fall of The Four Seasons, mostly through the group's music, Under the Streetlamp casts a wider net.
"We call the song catalog the 'American Radio Songbook,'" Wiley told the Chicago Tribune in March. "If it was on the radio, we may sing it. We do Bob Seger, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Dion and the Belmonts, pretty much anything from the 1950s to the 1980s."
Wiley helped form the group in 2008 with other members from the Chicago production of "Jersey Boys". The group toured a bit, but really broke big a few years later with their first PBS special in 2012. Two other PBS specials have followed and a fourth is in the works.
The show has evolved over the years and even grew into playing a handful of rock songs from the early years of MTV.
And the lineup has too, as Wiley is the only remaining founding member. Eric Gutman spent three years in Broadway and touring productions of "Jersey Boys". Brandon Wardell appeared in Broadway productions of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Catch Me If You Can," among others. The newest member, David Larsen starred on Broadway in "Good Vibrations" and also appeared in "Billy Elliot: The Musical" and "American Idiot".
"It's not a musical, it's a party," singer/guitarist Wardell told the Santa Barbara Independent in December. "We cut loose more than on the PBS special, and we expect people to sing along and dance if they feel like it. We like it when things get rowdy."
