Grace was born March 13, 1928 in Lidgerwood, ND. Daughter of Clayton and Mabel (Sterns) Wohlwend, she grew up on a farm south of Geneseo in Richland County. She loved trees and remembers carrying water every day as soon as she was big enough to save the farmstead trees during the late 1930's. Grace graduated from Lidgerwood High School in 19. She got a teaching certificate and taught in multiple small rural school houses in Sargent County. She was united in marriage to Elvoy Askerooth on November 25, 1948. In 1952, she received her Teaching Degree from Valley City State Teachers College (Valley City State University). She also taught in Montana for a year and then taught fulltime at local schools.

Grace was active in American Legion Auxiliary, Cayuga Homemakers, Wild Rice Soil Conservation Auxiliary, Alter Guild and a Member of Nordland Lutheran church. Grace was also a member of the Turtle Club, which was started after WWII and involved getting together for coffee parties with the neighbors.

She raised their three children on the family farm while being active in the community, farming, and taking care of the livestock. She was an active partner in the farm from running tractors, trucks and the combine to feeding and tending the family cows and hogs. Grace had a big garden with rhubarb, strawberries, and flowers which she loved to spend time in and used the produce to feed her family. Grace loved to bake and would make bread, cookies, bars, and caramel rolls.

Grace & Elvoy traveled to all fifty states and Canada. In the winter, Grace and Elvoy lived in Apache Junction, AZ where they met with other ND people at the Sargent County Breakfasts and played many card games with friends. Grace had a quick wit and smile and loved to play Bingo, checkers with her grandsons, and cards with family and friends.
