SISSETON, S.D. – A 23-year-old woman died and a 28-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 near the North Dakota and South Dakota border. Names of the two people involved are not being released pending notification of families. A 2007 Ford Crew Cab was southbound on Interstate 29 when the vehicle left the road and eventually rolled about 17 miles north of Sisseton..
SPICER, Minn. — Despite the recent long stretch of below-zero weather in Minnesota in recent weeks, ice fishermen have been going through the ice on central Minnesota lakes in the past few days. Three incidents were reported on Friday, Jan. 19. Two ice fishermen from Spicer in east-central Minnesota were able to safely climb out of a pickup truck that plunged into water Friday evening offshore on Green Lake in Spicer.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Thursday, Jan. 18, announced the state has approved changing the name of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis to Bde Maka Ska. The DNR’s decision follows a Hennepin County Board resolution requesting the change.
ST. PAUL — A record number of Minnesotans have signed up for health insurance coverage through the state’s MNsure program. The program said Wednesday, Jan. 17, that 116,358 residents have enrolled in the individual market from Nov. 1 to Jan. 14, breaking the previous year’s record of 114,810.
BISMARCK -- – A North Dakota Powerball player made the trip to Bismarck Tuesday, Jan. 16, to claim the $100,000 Powerball prize. The lucky winner from Dickinson, who chose to remain anonymous, hit it big with a quick pick ticket. The person matched four white balls and the Powerball for $50,000, but then had purchased the multiplier to double the winnings. The winner said initial plans include paying off some bills and putting the rest away for a college fund.
BISMARCK, N.D. – About 630,000 gallons or 150 barrels of produced water has spilled in western North Dakota after a valve failed on a tank used in a carbon storage study by the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Center. GROTON, S.D. – A 34-year-old Aberdeen man has been identified as the man who died Saturday afternoon when his vehicle went into the ditch and hit a metal construction container about seven miles south of Groton. . Matthew Krawiec was the driver and only person involved in the crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
ROCHESTER, Minn. --- A 25-year-old Rochester man is being held in jail after he shot and killed a teenager after the two were in a vehicle crash over the weekend in the southern Minnesota city. Alexander William Weiss is being held on probable cause for second degree after he shot Muhammed Rahim, 17, also of Rochester, in the chest, police said. Weiss told police it was in self-defense.
GROTON, S.D. – A 34-year-old man died Saturday afternoon about 1:30 p.m. in a one-vehicle crash seven miles south of Groton. The name of the man is not being released pending notification of family members. He was the only person involved.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Zac Brown Band is coming to the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls this summer, with tickets going on sale next Friday, Jan. 19. The Sioux Falls stop will be the second city on the band’s new 27-date tour on Saturday, June 9. The band will also have a concert later in the summer, Aug. 10, at Target Field in downtown Minneapolis.
