MOORHEAD — The process of selecting a jury to decide the fate of Justin Critt, a Moorhead man charged with murder and arson, began Monday, May 7. His trial is expected to last three weeks. Critt, 40, is accused of bludgeoning 49-year-old Melissa Willcoxon to death with a hammer and setting ablaze the south Moorhead home she was housesitting in 2016. Critt, who'd been hired as a handyman by the owners of the rental house, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree arson.
FARGO — Four men charged last year with patronizing a minor for commercial sexual activity were sentenced to probation Monday, May 7, according to Cass County District Court documents.
FARGO — A new student housing complex in the 1600 block of North University Drive is nearly complete and set to open in August, developers say. Construction of the complex, called The Bridges, began in the summer of 2017 and is expected to be completed by the end of July, said Ted Sanders of PROffutt Limited Partnership, the real estate division of the R.D. Offutt Company. The project was led by the North Dakota State University Foundation and Alumni Association, which chose PROffutt to develop the complex.
FARGO — The trial of a Moorhead man accused of bludgeoning a woman to death with a hammer and setting fire to the home she was housesitting is slated to begin Monday, May 7, in Clay County District Court. Justin Critt, 40, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree arson in the 2016 death of 49-year-old Melissa Willcoxon. The trial is expected to last three weeks, with the first week to be spent on jury selection.
FARGO — A man accused of stabbing another man here in March was sentenced to 90 days in jail and was given credit for 60 days already served, according to Clay County District Court records. Frank Muniz, 57, pleaded guilty Thursday, May 3, to a misdemeanor count of fifth-degree assault. Two felony charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon were dismissed, court records show. On March 5, Muniz and a 41-year-old man got into an argument at Muniz's apartment in Moorhead, and Muniz slashed the man with a hunting knife, according to court documents.
MOORHEAD — A 24-year-old Moorhead man was sentenced Tuesday, May 1, to a one-year rehabilitation stint followed by 10 years of probation for his role in robbing a Casey's General Store in Moorhead in May 2016. Dylan J. Beckman was sentenced on one count of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, for which he pleaded guilty. Another count of aiding and abetting was dismissed. Beckman was the getaway driver while his co-defendant, Steven James Golden, 24, robbed the store with a BB gun. Golden was sentenced to 23 months in prison in January.
MOORHEAD — Shelly Carlson, a 25-year resident of Moorhead, announced Friday her plans to run for the Ward 2 Moorhead City Council seat, according to a news release. Carlson is the second to announce she will run for the Ward 2 seat after Mike Lemke, owner of Lemke Home Improvements, declared his candidacy on April 24. The seat became available after Melissa Fabian resigned from the position on April 23.
FARGO — The trial of William Hoehn, who's charged in the killing of a pregnant Fargo woman will be postponed once again to September, court documents said. His trial was previously moved from March to May. The trial is now set to start Sept. 18. Both defense and prosecuting attorneys agreed to the delay, court documents show. Hoehn, 32, along with Brooke Crews, was charged in the killing of 22-year-old Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind and kidnapping her newborn in August.
